Marco, trasportato a Venezia da Alessandria d'Egitto, ma fu distrutta e ricostruita nel sec. XI dal doge Domenico Contarini. Nel 1807 divenne ufficialmente la cattedrale di Venezia.		The basilica of S. Marco is a gem of incredible beauty. The first basilica was built in 832 to house the body of S. Mark, moved to Venice from Alexandria in Egypt, but was destroyed and rebuilt in sec. XI by Doge Domenico Contarini. In 1807 it officially became the cathedral of Venice.
